W. A. Criswell nació en Eldorado, Oklahoma, el cuarto hijo de la pareja formada por Wallie Amos Criswell y Anna Currie Criswell en 1909. Se convirtió a Cristo a la edad de diez años (1919) y en 1922 fue “llamado al ministerio”. Se inscribió en la Universidad de Baylor en Waco, Texas, donde se graduó en 1931, con 22 años de edad. Continuó su entrenamiento ministerial en el Seminario Teológico Bautista del Sur en Louisville, Kentucky, donde en 1934, con 25 años de edad, terminó una maestría, y un doctorado en teología en el año 1937, con 28 años de edad. En Noviembre del 1944, Criswell se convirtió en pastor de la Primera Iglesia Bautista de Dallas, Texas. Bajo su liderazgo, la predicación expositiva y su fuerte énfasis en la evangelización, esta Iglesia experimentó un gran crecimiento. En 1968 fue electo presidente de la Convención Bautista del Sur, por un período de dos años. Fue autor de más de cincuenta libros. En 1971 se fundó en Dallas el Instituto Bíblico Criswell con el propósito de entrenar ministros en una teología bíblica conservadora. En 1998, una batalla contra el cáncer de colon le envió a la cama durante cinco meses, pero se recuperó. Finalmente en el año 2003, Criswell sucumbió, pasando a la presencia del Señor. Le sobrevivieron su esposa, Betty, su hija, Mabel Ann, y dos nietos.

ABSTRACT

W. A. Criswell was born in Eldorado, Oklahoma, the fourth son of the couple formed by Wallie Amos Criswell and Anna Currie Criswell in 1909. He was converted to Christ at the age of ten years (1919) and in 1922 was “called to the ministry”. He enrolled at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he graduated in 1931, with 22 years old. He continued his ministerial training at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, where in 1934, 25 years old, finished a master”s degree and a doctorate in theology in 1937, with 28 years old. In November 1944, Criswell became pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas. Under his leadership, expository preaching and its strong emphasis on evangelism, the church experienced tremendous growth. In 1968 he was elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention, for a period of two years. He was the author of more than fifty books. It was founded in 1971 in Dallas the Criswell Bible Institute in order to train ministers in a conservative biblical theology. In 1998, a battle against colon cancer sent him to bed for five months, but recovered. Finally in 2003, Criswell succumbed, passing to the Lord”s presence. He was survived by his wife, Betty, his daughter, Mabel Ann, and two grandchildren.
