ACQUIRING TRANSCULTURAL SENSITIVITY: A SPECIAL MISSION TO THE CHURCHES

ABSTRACT

Each individual has certain cultural acquisition, which is in constant motion due to the interaction with people from other cultures. Thus, people are always learning and developing culturally. These changes are accompanied by feelings of insecurity and fear. The philosophers of antiquity already recognized that the encounter with the unknown causes pain, no matter how good the intention. The pedagogy of Milton Bennett presented a concept of transcultural learning whose different stages seek to do justice to every person and their respective situations and learning ability. Although the model of the stepped structure is questionable, the bridges designed by Bennett are very useful in the transcultural work in churches. So one can be aware of ethnocentric attitudes or even enthnorelations - our own and those of others - and from that develop the next step to be taken in the relationship progress without overtaxing himself or the other. The author illustrates his theory with experiences drawn especially from the interaction between Germans and Africans, but are applicable in any transcultural encounter. Precisely in the context of the churches one can create environments and find "people-bridge" to enable the cross-cultural interaction in a positive way, although patient is needed.
