The Presence of the Future: the hope of resurrection as a paradigm of existence in Pauline theology

Abstract: Research in the field of Pauline theology remains vast, even with a growing number of researchers; it is still insufficient to fully explore what remains. His theology, as presented in his epistles, is directly related to one of the fundamental truths of the Christian faith: the resurrection of Jesus. Given its historical and cultural context, Pauline theology is a field that never becomes outdated. Even though it has been a much-debated subject since the beginning of church history, the resurrection remains and always will be an important and relevant topic. Therefore, this article is divided into three parts, in addition to the introduction and concluding remarks. First, it addresses the development of eschatology in late Judaism; then, it defends the resurrection of Jesus as an eschatological event; and finally, it discusses Paul and the resurrection of the dead. In other words, this work aims to present, in brief, the historical and intellectual development of the Jewish faith in the resurrection of the dead, and how this doctrine was fundamental to the construction of the Pauline kerygma. This article also aims to demonstrate how this eschatological hope in a future restoration of humankind, in connection with Paul's conception of the pneumatic Christ, serves as a paradigm for the church and for the individual in their present existential reality. This article presents a very important analysis for students and researchers of Pauline theology; as a bibliographical approach, research on this subject contributes greatly to the ecclesiology of the Brazilian church.
