Glossolalia in Acts and the relationship with Spirit Baptism Brief dialogues with the Reformed-Pentecostal interpretation

Abstract: This article takes up the theme of glossolalia or speaking in tongues in connection with the debate on baptism in the Spirit. The themes in question still arouse the interest of many Christians, especially in communities with a Pentecostal and neo-Pentecostal tradition. But there is also an interest – less evident, among Christians in historic Protestant churches, including the Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, Anglican, Congregational churches and others. We propose to present a bibliographical research interacting with texts from authors located in historical Protestantism, more specifically authors who are part of the Presbyterian Reformed tradition (Calvinist churches). In both sources used, we chose to use, in addition to the authors cited, official documents, including confessions, catechisms and pastoral letters. We seek to dialogue the pneumatological thinking of churches originating from the Pentecostal movement, with emphasis on the Assemblies of God. The results indicate that, from the historical Protestant perspective, baptism in the Spirit occurs at conversion, without the need to speak in tongues. On the other hand, from the Pentecostal perspective, baptism in the Spirit is seen as a post-conversion event, with speaking in tongues as the initial evidence.
